BASQUE COUNTRY / VITORIA-GASTEIZ
There are several reasons for choosing the Basque Country and, more specifically Vitoria-Gasteiz.
In addition to easy access and its excellent infrastructure, it is the ideal venue.
Associative and solidarity movements are strong and relevant as was seen when organising a previous EUCOCO and, once again, this significance will become evident in this special edition with the support of the Peace and Freedom for Western Sahara Intergroup of the Basque Parliament, the Basque Agency for Development & Cooperation, Euskal Fondoa and also with the support of key institutions, such as the City Council of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Provincial Council of Alava.
The city of Vitoria-Gasteiz meets all the requirements to host the 44th edition of EUCOCO and will prove to be up to the task of organising this important international event, which is expected to attract more than 500 people from all over Spain and abroad.
This Conference coincides with the 44th anniversary of the illegal Tripartite Agreements signed in Madrid, by which the last Government of the Dictatorship abandoned and betrayed the Saharawi People.
44 years later we believe and trust that the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz will be remembered after this EUCOCO by Agreements in favour of the FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE of the Saharawi People, the defence of International Law and Human Rights and by the drafting of the DECLARATION OF VITORIA-GASTEIZ which will reflect that the Spanish State has a historical, moral and political debt with the Saharawi People since 1975.
For this reason, we seek the support of all Basque society and its Institutions and entities, so that this 44th EUCOCO will become the most important held to date. Its success will be the success of all the people who contribute to making this possible, all who believe in Justice and Freedom; it will be the success of the Sahrawi people.
We want the Conference to make a decisive contribution to the international community’s effort to advance the peaceful settlement of the conflict and to be a significant milestone in the peace process.
Vitoria-Gasteiz can be a meeting point where a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara can be reached based on the dictates of UN resolutions and international law. It can also be an opportunity for PEACE and for an end to the suffering of a people who deserve to live in dignity and freedom in their territory.
We need the support of all the FRIENDS of the Saharawi People, regardless of their political ideas.
We need your active solidarity and your presence at the Conference of Support and Solidarity with the Saharawi People which will take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz at the EUROPA Congress Palace (Avenida de Gasteiz, 85) on 22 and 23 November. The noble cause of the Saharawi people has always received the support of all Basque citizens and their institutions.
44 years have passed since the ruling of the International Court of Justice of The Hague (16/10/1975), 44 years since the famous "Green March" (06/11/1975), 44 years of military occupation by Morocco and 44 years of abandonment of the Saharawi people by the Spanish State.
The time has come to put an end to injustice, illegality and occupation and to open a new page in history; the time has come for the Spanish State to assume its responsibility and what better occasion to do so than the 44th EUCOCO to be held in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The Solidarity Movement has endowed itself with a “Work Plan” and a “Roadmap” for 2019, a year of special relevance for the conflict in the Sahara, a year full of elections in which the Decolonisation of Western Sahara has to play a key role in each of our actions and demands and be present in our relations with Society.
